Can I use GPS coordinates with what3words?
Free users can search using GPS coordinates in the what3words app and online map.
Searching with GPS coordinates
You can enter latitude and longitude into the search bar in the following formats:
-30.606775, 29.907674
30° 36' 24.39" S 29° 54' 27.626" E
S30.606775, E29.907674
To display coordinates alongside what3words addresses and to include them when sharing locations in the app and online map, you’ll need to be a what3words Pro member.
In the app
Open the menu to the top left and select Settings.
Tap Display settings and then select the format you’d like the latitude and longitude to be shown in.
The preview box will then show you how this will look.
You can also open the menu and tap Settings, then Share settings. Select Latitude & Longitude, and the format you need (decimals, degrees, minutes & seconds). Now, whenever you share a what3words address, the latitude and longitude will be included.
Using the online map
The online map can’t display GPS coordinates alongside a what3words address, but you can choose to include them in a message when you share a location. Here’s how:
Select the square you need, then click Share and Customise share settings.
Toggle on Latitude & Longitude, then select the format you need. Now, whenever you click Share in the address box, you’ll see the location’s coordinates in the share preview.
