How do I use what3words to get help in an emergency? (UK only)

Edited

In an emergency, you should call 999 and give the call handler the what3words address for where help is needed (you will need phone signal to do this – the what3words app cannot pass location information directly to the emergency services).

To find your current what3words address, follow these steps:

  1. Open the what3words app and wait for the blue dot to stabilise. This will ensure you have the most accurate what3words address.*

  2. Tap the arrow icon towards the bottom right (above the satellite mode button).

  3. The what3words address will then display at the bottom of your screen (if you're using an older version of our app, the address will be at the top of your screen).

See our demo to learn more:

*The location accuracy is dependent on your device’s GPS signal. It will be more accurate when you are outside with a clear view of the sky.

What if I don’t have internet?

No problem! You can still find your current location on the what3words app because this works using your device’s GPS signal. Without data the map won’t load, but your location will update when you tap the ‘locate me’ arrow.

Which emergency services accept what3words?

what3words is accepted by over 85% of UK emergency services – see the full list here. It’s also used by some services in other countries.
